One look at the GamesCom 2009 show floor and you can tell that Microsoft is expecting big things from Forza Motorsport 3 when it arrives in the European market. Approximately one-third of its entire booth was dedicated to Turn 10's upcoming racing sim, with racing seats, steering wheels, and three-monitor setups displaying the full scope of the game's new cockpit view. Thankfully, we had the opportunity to escape the teeming masses of the show floor for a bit and see what Microsoft had to show behind closed doors.
Microsoft Game Studios product manager Armitz Lay was on hand to demo a new mode in Forza 3 aimed at the more casual racing fan. But before we get to that, it's worth noting that Turn 10 has the hardcore fan pretty much covered already, because they've upped the number of career mode events from the 90 found in Forza 2 to 200 this time around. It's laid out much the same way as the last game, with a collection of themed events that require a certain make or model to enter, like events limited to American muscle cars or those that require rear-wheel drive. Now the career event layout comes with a new grid view to give you a more visual perspective of your overall progress, with each possible event depicted by rows and columns of small boxes. They're color-coded as well, with green boxes ones that you can enter now, gray boxes events that you can enter but first need to purchase the right vehicle, and boxes with a lock icon denoting that you need to advance further in your career to get to them.
For the casual fan, Microsoft is taking that giant collection of career events and distilling them into a new, entirely optional feature called season play. What this mode does is take your career progression and organize it chronologically on a calendar with a series of predetermined events marked on specific race days. If you're not a fan of the event coming up, you can simply skip it. The clever part is that season play adapts to your tastes as a driver, pulling data on what tracks you've shown a preference for and combining that with the type of cars you have in your garage to tailor the upcoming races to your own tastes. It sounds like a neat idea for players who are new to racing games--something that should help alleviate the confusion and sense of "There are so many open events. Which one should I race next?"
Season play is something that's coming alongside a few other new features to help out people who might just be getting their feet wet in the genre, including a new unlimited rewind feature for when you wreck your car, and a new auto-brake assist that lets you focus on steering and accelerating. That being said, Forza 3 is still a game that the hardcore audience can feel at home with, since it includes features like dynamic tire flexing, rollover accidents, and an in-cockpit view for added realism. (We're also told the game calculates physics at a top-in-class 360Hz refresh rate, but we won't even pretend to know what that sort of math means.)
